How it Works

Step 1: In most cases, we will simply assist you in setting up a domain name and web-hosting package that you have full control over.  The real benefit of having control is that you aren't dependant on me, or any web designer to do on-going updates to your site.  The cost for this is usually $12-$15 per year for your domain name and $5-$10 per month for your web-hosting package.  The process itself is straight-forward and most people are able to do it on their own.  Just gives us a call or send us an email. We will reply with a link where you can get started.  If you need on-site or telephone assistance with this step, we are available at our hourly rate.  If you already have a domain name and a web-hosting package, please skip this step and go to Step 2.

Step 2: Based on the look and feel you'd like to portray, we can design a complete website for you that is simple, unique and perhaps most importantly, user-friendly.  This tends to be the most expensive part initially, but once completed you are only left with your renewal fees as indicated in Step 1.  From time to time, you may need some tweaking or updates to your site.  We are happy to assist you with this, or we can tutor you on-site to allow you to make your own changes.  Please feel free to give us a call or send us an email for an estimate.

Some tips that may save you time and money…

Where to start with the design?  As you browse the internet, start a favorites or bookmark folder where you can collect some designs of websites that you like.  You may like the layout of one site and the colours of another.  Keeping a handy folder where you can refer back to these sites with your web designer is important.

Check out the competition!  Of course, you'll want to look at websites that belong to your closest competition.  Ask yourself what it is that makes you different from them.  Put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer and try searching on Google and⁄or Yahoo or any other search engine with keywords and phrases that you think those potential customers are likely to use.  Does your competition rank high in those search engines when using those keywords and key phrases?  You don't want to copy exactly what the competition is doing, but perhaps there are areas with your unique expertise that you can capitalize on.

Get it on paper!  Using graph or plain paper, start sketching out what you would like to include on your home page and then move on to the other pages.  When you do this however, turn your paper to landscape-style as opposed to portrait-style as this more closely resembles the computer screen that you and your users will be seeing with the finished site.  If you want a particular portion of text to link to another page or another website, underline it and add a note to where the link should go.  Drawing little boxes to indicate where you would like to add images with a note inside the box to indicate which image, will help you proportion everything as you would like it to appear.  It doesn't have to be a work of art, just a guide that will help you foresee the finished layout.  This will save time and make your web design dollars go a lot further.

Keep it simple, but effective!  This is especially important for your home page.  The more information you try to cram in, the more your users may have to scroll down to see it.  By sticking with short, leading sentences, think of ways to entice your visitors to go further into your site and visit other pages.

What about Search Engines like Google and Yahoo?  Keeping in mind the previous tip, try to use headings, words and keyphrases, especially on your home page, that your users are likely to find you with.  One of the last but most important steps in designing your website will include SEO or, "Search Engine Optimization".  This includes adding specific tags to the code of your pages that will help your users find you via search engines.
